Co-designing the synergistic ocean observing Network for ocean and climate monitoring and predictions
Session ID#: 253628
Session Description:
The ocean observing network spanning from global to coastal is essential for ocean and climate monitoring and predictions. Ocean observations are not only used directly for monitoring local or surface ocean variations, but are also ingested by data assimilation and other objective analysis techniques to reconstruct ocean fields with spatio-temporal extent, and serve as a foundation for ocean and climate monitoring and prediction systems. It is, therefore, to design the observation network from which we can obtain synergistic benefits from multi-platform observations. Since there are various purposes for ocean and climate monitoring and predictions, it is desirable to co-design the ocean observing network among value chain stakeholders to make it fit-for-purpose. In order to enhance such efforts, this section provides a platform for sharing experiences, discussing the best practices, and fostering opportunities to collaborate for ocean observing network evaluation and designing studies. There will be a particular emphasis, but not limited to, the development of effective co-designed ocean observing systems targeting ocean boundary current regions and marine heatwaves. We invite contributions from ongoing studies and proposals on designing and evaluating ocean observations targeting to wide-range of ocean and climate phenomena that address scientific and societal needs.
