Marine Nitrogen Cycling Across Scales and Environments

Session ID#: 253996

Session Description:
The marine nitrogen (N) cycle is central to ocean productivity, ecosystem health, and climate regulation. This session will explore N cycling across diverse oceanographic environments, from oxygen deficient zones (ODZs) and oligotrophic gyres to estuarine and coastal systems. Despite their differences, these environments are all sites of dynamic N transformations that influence local ecosystem functioning and drive global nutrient fluxes.

We invite contributions spanning biogeochemical and microbial dimensions of N cycling, including molecular mechanisms, microbial community dynamics, isotopic tracer studies, and numerical modeling. In expanding (ODZs), anaerobic microbial processes lead to loss of bioavailable N and greenhouse gas production (e.g., N2O), impacting ocean productivity and climate feedbacks. In contrast, oligotrophic regions rely on N fixation to sustain productivity under nutrient limitation. Estuaries and coastal zones, shaped by strong gradients and anthropogenic inputs, exhibit intensified and variable N cycling mediated by diverse microbial communities.

We particularly encourage integrative studies linking microbial-scale processes to macroscale patterns, highlighting innovative techniques (e.g., omics, stable-isotope probing), and addressing the impacts of climate change and human activities. By fostering dialogue among oceanographers, microbiologists, and modelers, we aim to advance a unified understanding of N cycling and its role in sustaining ecosystem health in a changing ocean.
