As a contemporary art curator working with socially-engaged and participatory methodologies within a publicly-funded, university-affiliated institutional framework, I am curious about what it might mean to rethink a socially-engaged curatorial practice as a curatorially-engaged civic and social approach to cultural work so that these methodologies of practice might have a long-term transformative effect on the art institution itself, including its civic and pedagogical role and function (rather than on project stakeholders: artists, community members, audiences in one off projects). From this curiosity, I further wonder: could the transformation of the art institution through its adoption of different cultural protocols and social economies brought to it through long-term curatorially-engaged approaches to cultural work be considered a performative form of “writing” with(not about) these projects?
