Design and Decoration of Libraries

Session will present: On location

As physical libraries are challenged by the digital revolution this session looks at their history, especially with respect to their conscious revival in Europe during the Renaissance and the intent to foster learning.

We invite papers that look at Library and Library Room design and decoration in Renaissance Europe. How did descriptions of ancient libraries inspire monastic, private, university and/or public libraries during the Fifteenth and Sixteenth centuries? How did the design and decoration articulate the function of a specific library? What architectural or iconographic elements were common? Were spaces and furnishings adapted to accommodate the printed book? Was the catalog incorporated in the design and/or indicated in the decorative elements? Was the library part of a larger cultural complex, to whom was it available, and how was it intended to function?

Individual examples of extant libraries and library rooms are particularly welcome.
