The Art of Letting Go Through Collage
Constraints and disruption, fragments and layering, happy accidents and closure — collage teaches students to trust their instincts, challenge traditional design conventions, and break free from the norm. My pedagogy goes beyond the techniques of analog, digital, and animated collages. Instead, it emphasizes the value of collage as a method for design psychology and design thinking.
The process begins with reflection on aspects of life beyond our control, prompting students to consider how uncertainty shapes their personal style. Are these unknowns intimidating? Do they resist them out of fear? I encourage "mindless making" and material experimentation, providing space for happy accidents.
This approach helps students rethink their creative process without the pressure of perfection. This session will demonstrate how embracing imperfection and letting go of rigid expectations through collage can help students navigate uncertainty in life and their design practice.
