Teaching in higher education within rural communities presents both opportunities and challenges. Rural institutions often face challenges due to barriers to arts education, including underfunded K–12 art programs and limited access to qualified instructors, which creates inequities that narrow students’ exposure to the arts and contribute to disparities in cultural capital. For this reason, robust arts programs are especially critical in rural contexts, as they expand students’ cultural and intellectual horizons, foster engagement with new experiences, and enhance both personal development and expand their creative practice.

Dakota State University (DSU) is located in a rural community with a population of approximately 6,000. South Dakota is among the most rural states in terms of both geography and population distribution. Many of our students come from communities within South Dakota or a similar rural environment. In an effort to overcome some of the unique challenges of exposing our students to the arts, DSU has recently launched an initiative to provide students with all the required art supplies each term. This initiative has alleviated the financial burden typically associated with studio coursework within an arts program. Furthermore, this initiative has lowered the barriers to participation and supports greater inclusion and retention. By removing cost-related obstacles, the university has created equitable opportunities for students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds to explore the arts as both an academic pursuit and a potential career path.
