A Textbook for Today’s Art History: A Round-Table Discussion with the New Authors of Gardner’s Art through the Ages
Session will present: On locationThis session features a discussion with the three co-authors of the new version of Gardner’s Art through the Ages, a time-honored art history survey text. Bing Huang, Rachel Stephens, and Karl Whittington are currently working to re-write much of the text in hopes of, among other things, expanding its coverage in more equitable ways so that it reflects where the field is today. The authors will share information about the process and challenges of re-working this critical text, especially as textbook writing comes new to all of them. This session invites attendees to engage in dialogue about the necessity of shifting traditional approaches to the teaching of the art history survey as well as the difficulty in implementing change.
