OS008
Dynamics of interbasin interactions from seasonal to centennial time scales

Session ID#: 76430

Session Description:
The Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans exhibit prominent climate variability across a wide range of timescales. The three ocean basins are also closely connected via both atmospheric bridges and oceanic tunnels (e.g., Indonesian throughflow). Recent studies, particularly the pacemaker experiments, have demonstrated that interbasin interactions can affect climate variability, such as ENSO-IOD interaction, impact of Atlantic-Pacific coupling on ENSO and IPO, interactions between Atlantic and Indian Oceans in both tropical and extratropical regions. Characterizing interbasin interactions and quantifying their impacts on climate variability remains an important challenge.

Papers are invited that address understanding, observing and/or simulating interbasin interaction processes from seasonal to centennial timescales in the past, present and future. The session will synthesize the latest observational and modeling efforts directed toward understanding the role of interbasin interaction in climate variability on various timescales and associated phenomena like ENSO, decadal climate variability, regional impacts of long-term climate variations and others.
