General Session: Atmospheric Chemistry & Composition

Session ID#: 157349

Session Description:
The composition of the atmosphere is determined by emissions, chemistry, deposition and transport. Emissions can be natural and man-made and include thousands of different compounds. Chemical removal occurs on time scales ranging from seconds to centuries, and secondary compounds are formed by this chemistry. Deposition is a more important loss mechanism for many compounds but is poorly described. Finally, transport on local, regional and global scales determines the geographic extent of the impact from emissions. Describing all of these processes to understand atmospheric composition is a grand challenge. It is an important challenge because ongoing changes in atmospheric composition affect many issues of societal importance including climate change, air quality, human and ecosystem health, and the stratospheric ozone layer.

This session provides a general forum for scientists working on Atmospheric Chemistry and Composition. In addition to new research, we welcome reviews, perspectives and presentation of new ideas.
