Changing Midlatitude Oceans: Dynamics, Predictability, and Links to the Atmosphere and Marine Ecosystems
Session ID#: 254701
Session Description:
Midlatitude oceans are undergoing rapid changes, including more frequent marine heatwaves as well as changes in ocean currents and upper-ocean stratification. These oceanic changes have been associated with extreme weather events and impacted marine ecosystems and fisheries. In this session, we consider the changing midlatitude oceans from physical and interdisciplinary perspectives, including the atmosphere, ocean chemistry, marine ecosystems, and fisheries, and their complex interactions. Through observational, modeling, and theoretical approaches, encompassing timescales from daily to multi-decadal, we invite submissions that aim to answer the question, "How will ongoing changes in the midlatitude oceans affect the sustainability of climate, ecosystems, and human societies in the future?". We especially welcome studies that investigate the physical mechanisms underlying these changes, such as ocean circulation shifts, stratification processes, mesoscale eddy dynamics, and air-sea heat exchange. The variability and changes in the midlatitude oceans are not governed solely by local dynamics, but also are influenced by (and exert influence on) global climate processes. Thus, we also encourage topics on the interactions between the midlatitude and the polar/tropical oceans.
